Thomasville Campus opens new building
Sept. 27, 2011 – Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) opened its new 52,000 square foot HealthScienceBuilding on the Thomasville campus. The building will serve students pursuing associate of science degrees in nursing and practical nursing and also will be home to two new programs: veterinary technology and land, forest and wildlife management.
The facility houses Natural Science classrooms and labs including anatomy and physiology, biology, microbiology, chemistry and physics. The space provides a 144-seat tiered lecture hall which is used for larger classes and also rented out for various meetings and community events.
The building features general classroom space, computerized classroom space, equipment storage for classrooms, program lab space, biology lab space, microbiology lab space, chemistry lab space, general offices and a virtual hospital area.
The design of the new building unifies the campus in the architectural style established by the Administration and ClassroomBuilding, the campus’s flagship building, completed in 2005.
Plans for the building began when SWGTC administration identified the need for increased learning space and additional programs. State-of-the-art teaching equipment was crucial to meeting the needs of the community and service areas.
“We are thrilled to be opening our new HealthScienceBuilding and to welcome new programs to our over 80 credit programs already offered here at SouthwestGeorgiaTechnicalCollege,” said Dr. Craig Wentworth, president of SouthwestGeorgiaTechnicalCollege. “This remarkable facility is an exciting addition to our instructional resources and will allow us to continue to meet our service delivery area's workforce needs.”
Attending the grand openening were State Sen. Tim Golden, State Sen. John Bulloch, State Rep. Gene Maddox, State Rep. Darlene Taylor and State Rep. Ellis Black. TechnicalCollege System of Georgia Commission Ron Jackson was the keynote speaker.
