Shovels turn at Ogeechee Tech

October 14, 2010 - OgeecheeTechnicalCollege broke ground for its new Health Science Building North with Governor Sonny Perdue, Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Ron Jackson, and other dignitaries on hand. The 26,000-square-foot building will provide much needed space for Ogeechee Tech’s Imaging Science programs. With a price tag of just over $6 million, the project will fill a need for additional space at Ogeechee Tech.

“Two years ago we started Fall quarter with around 1900 students, but this Fall we have nearly 3000 students enrolled, so this new building will help meet a significant need for our College, our community, and especially our students,” said Dr. Dawn Cartee, president of Ogeechee Technical College. Dr. Cartee expressed her appreciation to the local legislative delegation, the Governor, Commissioner Jackson and others for their work in securing funding for the project.

“As we baby-boomers grow older, we need to know that those who will provide our healthcare have been trained properly on all the latest technology and techniques. We know that facilities such as this building for which we are breaking ground, and the equipment and instructors in it, will ensure healthcare professionals are prepared to take care of us!” stated Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Ron Jackson.

“We are honored to serve this area, and we feel it is our duty to make sure that there are excellent educational opportunities for our citizens. The procurement of funds for this new building was a team effort and all of our delegation, along with the Governor, those working in the budget office, and others made this possible,” stated State Sen. Jack Hill.

Governor Sonny Perdue discussed the importance of healthcare to the citizens of Georgia, and noted that the first step in providing quality healthcare is quality education of those entering the profession. “I spoke with some of the students here, and I’ve let them know that I want them to do their best in getting their education, because they may be taking care of me and my family some day,” stated Perdue. The Governor also commented on the groundbreaking for a new Great Dane trailer plant which was held in Statesboro earlier in the day, and the significance OgeecheeTechnicalCollege played in that event. “I can tell you that Great Dane would not be locating here in BullochCounty if this technical college was not here. The ability to have a skilled workforce is the key to attracting industry, and having those skilled workers available is dependent on the training that Ogeechee Tech is capable of providing.”
