Ground Broken on New Ag Lab

March 5, 2010 – City, county and state officials gathered in Tifton to break ground on the new Tifton Agricultural Laboratories facility building. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin was the keynote speaker at the event and talked about the importance of agriculture in southwest Georgia. The project expands Tifton’s laboratory and also moves the state’s Weights and Measures and Motor Fuels divisions from metro Atlanta to Tifton.

The $11.5 million project includes construction of a 26,000-square-foot building that will house a seed lab, four new chemistry labs and multi-purpose areas and a 27,000-square-foot fuel and metrology laboratory. Additionally, the existing 5,500-square-foot building will be renovated and a 3,000-square-foot hazardous storage building will be constructed.

When it opens in early 2011, the facility is expected to bring 25 new jobs to TiftCounty.
