Ground broken on Carter Complex
April 16, 2012 - Rosalynn Carter was joined by her husband President Jimmy Carter, Georgia Southwestern State University President Kendall Blanchard, local leaders and dignitaries at a ceremonial groundbreaking of the second phase of the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex.
The new 35,000-square-foot building will be home to the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving, the psychology and sociology department and additional lab space for the sciences. Construction is expected to be completed at the end of this year.
Phase 1, a 43,000-square-foot state-of-the-art classroom and clinical space for the School of Nursing, will be completed this summer.
"This university has continued to grow and has become a great institution," said Mrs. Carter, an alumnae of GSW. "I am honored to have my name associated with this great university."
"I think this is a wonderful honor for a wonderful person," said State Sen. George Hooks. "It is also a benefit for the people of Sumter County, the community and the people of the state of Georgia."
"This Health and Human Sciences project is perhaps the most important project in the history of Georgia Southwestern State University," agreed GSW President Blanchard. "We appreciate Mrs. Carter. She has been so important to this institution over the years. To have someone of her stature as an alum, I can't tell you how important that is to Georgia Southwestern and our reputation not only across the state and across the country, but across the world."
