Gainesville State Tops Out

October 21, 2010 – Construction workers, college faculty and staff and friends gathered at Gainesville State College’s new AcademicBuilding to recognize construction workers had reached the building's highest point during a ‘Topping Out Celebration” on October 21.

The new building is located on the GainesvilleState’s Oakwood Campus. The 130,000-square-foot, five-story facility will include classrooms, tiered classrooms, offices, conference rooms, a multi-purpose room with removable partitions, study rooms, faculty lounges, a 72-seat classroom, computer labs, sound stage with studio and sound recording room. The center of the building will feature an atrium with a stone wall and balcony on the fifth floor.

“This building will almost double our instructional capacity,” said College President Dr. Martha Nesbitt. “It is going to truly be the future of this college for years.”

At the time of the topping out celebration, over 30,000 cubic yards of dirt had been moved and over 221 cast-in-place concrete piles had been installed. Over 1,000 tons of rebar, 235,000 linear feet of post tension cable, 9,000 yards of concrete and 250,000 contact square feet of forms were in the structure. At completion, there will be over 272,000 bricks and 19,000 square feet of natural stone.

The college will welcome students to classes in the new structure in the Fall, 2011.
