Elberton campus opens Coggins Building
February 1, 2011 – The Elberton Campus of AthensTechnicalCollege celebrated its newest building with ribbon cutting ceremonies at the B. Frank Coggins Building.
The $4.5 million project provides 26,500-square-feet of instructional space, state-of-the-art laboratories and a 200-seat auditorium. The building will provide instruction to students enrolled in the industrial systems technology, diesel technology, electrical construction and maintenance, welding and plumbing programs.
Athens Tech is experiencing unprecedented growth. Since 2003, enrollment has tripled, making it the nation’s eighth fastest-growing two-year college of its size. The Elberton Campus has served over 10,000 students since first opening in 1997. With the addition of the CogginsBuilding, the 42-acre campus now boasts nearly 100,000-square-feet of classroom and lab space.
Dr. Flora Tydings, Athens Tech president, congratulated all of those who worked to make the building a reality, from community leaders and elected officials to staff to the construction team. She specifically thanked the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission team for their dedication to the project’s success.
The campus, donated to the school by Mr. Coggins in 1994, incorporates a six-acre lake and a community park. Opened in 1997, the campus serves students from Elbert, Hart, and WilkesCounties and surrounding counties.
